Burlington is part of Alamance County in central North Carolina. This county is mostly rural. Because of this, Burlington is actually the largest city in the area with more than 50,000 people. The town first got its start in 1849 when the railroad was starting to develop in the area. When a depot was built to support expansion, there was soon a need for more commerce. With this growing demand, the township of Burlington was born, and Burlington real estate boomed.
Although the railroad eventually redirected away from Burlington, the local area managed to survive thanks to smart investments from entrepreneurs. Instead of supporting the railroad, industry turned toward textiles and manufacturing. Even as industry continues to shift, Burlington remains strong. Despite its small size, Burlington's position near Greensboro and Durham still gives it strategic importance in the region. With a vibrant city center and ample opportunities for employment, Burlington real estate is still in high demand
Burlington originally had its own school system, but there was a strategic merger in 1996. This merger coupled Burlington schools with the rest of Alamance County. By merging these school systems, students are able to receive more access to programs all throughout the county. In addition to the public school system, there are also several charter schools in the area. This includes River Mill Academy, Hawbridge School, and Clover Garden School. Several private schools with Christian affiliations are also options. These numerous choices for education are another reason why families find real estate in Burlington so appealing.
Burlington has lots of options for fun activities, including many parks, lakes (including marinas), an aquatic center, a movie theater, the Indian Valley Golf Course, and plenty of shopping and restaurants. There are plenty of youth and adult athletics available including baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, and swimming. Burlington is home to the Alamance County YMCA.

The city has lots of food and dining options. In addition to the large shopping centers, you'll find lots of options for food and drink in downtown Burlington, including homemade ice cream at Smitty's, classic sandwiches at the Boston Sandwich Shop and Zack’s Hot Dogs, and craft coffee and espresso at The Blend. There is also a new version of a co-op at Burlington Beerworks, which features both craft brewing and menu options inspired by local food.
