Around 15,000 people are estimated to live in Mebane, which is 8.5 square miles large. Mebane is conveniently located between the Triangle and the Triad. I-40 runs through the city, making it easy to get to RTP (30 minutes), downtown Durham (26 minutes), downtown Raleigh (50 minutes), Chapel Hill (30 minutes), and Greensboro (34 minutes). There is also a small airport in Mebane.
Mebane, named after a Revolutionary War general, Alexander Mebane, was first incorporated in 1881. Mebane was incorporated as a city in 1987.
Mebane is served by the Alamance-Burlington School System. Charter schools in the area include River Mill Academy, Hawbridge School, and Clover Garden School.
Mebane features a charming downtown with cafes, restaurants, shopping, a historical museum, and more. There are several events downtown throughout the year, including the Dogwood Festival in April, a 4th of July parade, and Autumn Fest in October. Popular spots to eat and drink downtown include Filament Coffee, a coffee shop that brews locally roasted beans from Joe Van Gogh, and the Mebane Downtown Table, a restaurant featuring southern-style food.
Mebane has plenty of shopping, with one of the largest outlet malls in the area, Tanger Outlets, where you'll find tons of outlets, including J.Crew, Cole Haan, Banana Republic, Under Armour, Le Creuset, and more. Mebane is also home to a winery, Iron Gate Vineyards, which hosts tours and wine tastings throughout the week.
The area is home to several parks, including Lake Michael Park, which features a lake where you can fish and paddleboat, walking trails, and more. A new park, which is expected to include a dog park, soccer fields, splash park, play space, and more, is set to open in 2018.
